Radio on the Move – and Not

In the past, people listened to radio at home or in their cars.  And they still are, but mobile applications like Pandora are giving listeners access in places where they never could hear radio before. Pandora, which is one of iPhone’s most downloaded apps, has been finding that most of the people who register for a new account on the internet radio site do so on a mobile phone.  This has prompted Time Westgren, Pandora’s founder to say, “I’m beginning to think that our future is going to be more mobile-centric than I had even thought, and sooner. It really allows us to become a much more serious and viable alternative to broadcast radio.”  But here’s an interesting point. Once people have downloaded the site onto  their phones, they are then plugging their phones into speakers in their cars and their homes.  So the mobile site becomes both active and static.

Another interesting point, says the NY Times, is that Pandora’s users click on mobile ads twice as often as they do on web ads.
