Nonprofit Journalism

One of the possibilities for the future of news that’s been floated around is the advance of nonprofit journalism.  Some new stuff is happening in that vein in California.  Last week a venture capitalist pledge $5 million to create a new outlet in the Bay Area that has already gotten partnerships with the NY Times, UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and KQED.  The Times will carry the work of the start-up, and the other two will provide reporters. Down south in both LA and Orange County, start-up nonprofit news organizations are hatching as well.  These organizations will ask for donations from readers.  The LA Times has the story. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-et-onthemedia28-2009sep28,0,1950200,full.column
