The Metamorphosis of MySpace

What is MySpace these days, anyway? Even the CEO has said to FT that he isn’t interested in trying to keep up with Facebook.  The site is still one of the most visited on the web, with 100 million unique visitors, but not in the social arena.  Rather, MySpace is becoming the go to spot for music and video.  MySpace Music has grown 1000% in the past year.  And I have to say personally that I’ve found stuff there that I can’t find on iTunes, Amazon or even Pandora. To that end, MySpace this summer acquired popular music recommendation startup iLike to bolster its music service, and the site’s broader infrastructure. In addition, it has partnered with iTunes to allow users to buy music without leaving the MySpace site. And, it now has the largest catalogue of music videos on the Web.  So watch this space, as other new features figure into the metamorphosis of MySpace.
