BW Gets Big

I used to work at BusinessWeek.  It was a wonderful institution, and so I have been watching news of its sale with some trepidation.  Bloomberg has outlined its plans for the magazine, and it sounds like it is going after the Economist model.  Not a bad idea, since it’s a model that clearly works.  The Economist is making money while all around it fall into the pit.  MediaWeek reports that the model is going to be more of everything  — “bigger, glossier and more international, [and it will] increase the number of pages in the magazine, upgrade the paper stock, double the story count and expand its global coverage”. As for the Web, Bloomberg plans to keep most of the magazine’s content free, but will charge users roughly $100 a year for access to really in-depth content.
